Every compressor makes water. It condenses in the tank, rides down the hose, and ends up in your nailer, your impact wrench or your paint. A filter-regulator is the $30 to $90 part that stops that and lets you set one working pressure for the shop. Here is which type you need, and six we would buy.
Our top picks at a glance
Filter, regulator, lubricator, dryer: what each one does
- Filter. Spins water droplets and dirt out of the air into a bowl you drain. Rated in microns; 5 is good, 40 is coarse.
- Regulator. Knocks tank pressure (150 PSI) down to tool pressure (90 PSI) and holds it there. Every air tool wants one.
- Lubricator. Drips oil into the line for impacts and grinders. Never on a line that feeds paint, tires or blow-off.
- Dryer. Desiccant beads that pull water vapor, which filters cannot. Only painting needs it.
Most garages: a filter-regulator at the compressor, an inline filter at the tool end of the hose, done. Add a lubricator on a dedicated tool drop, and a dryer only if you spray.

What we'd buy, and why

Primefit 3/8" Filter-Regulator with Gauge
| Type | Filter + regulator, one body |
|---|---|
| Port size | 3/8" NPT |
| Filtration | 40 micron, polycarbonate bowl |
| Max inlet | 200 PSI |
| Mounting | Bracket included |
The filter-regulator most garages should bolt to the wall next to the compressor: it strips water and grit, sets one pressure for the whole shop, and costs $30. The 40-micron element is coarse by industrial standards, which is fine for air tools and nailers and not fine enough for paint. Twist the bowl drain every few weeks.
- Filter and regulator in one for $30
- Bracket included; mounts on a wall or the compressor
- Gauge on the front where you can read it
- 40 micron is not paint-grade
- Polycarbonate bowl; keep solvents off it

Campbell Hausfeld 3/8" Filter/Regulator (PA212503AV)
| Type | Filter + regulator |
|---|---|
| Port size | 3/8" NPT |
| Filtration | 5 micron |
| Max inlet | 150 PSI |
| Drain | Manual, metal bowl guard |
Eight times finer filtration than the Primefit for about $50 more. Five microns catches the water mist and fine oil that a coarse element waves through, which is the difference between a cutoff tool that runs forever and one that seizes. If you run air tools more than a few times a month, this is the one.
- 5-micron element
- Metal bowl guard
- Regulator holds steady under load
- Manual drain; you have to remember
- No lubricator (see the DeWalt if you want one)

DeWalt 3/8" Filter-Regulator-Lubricator (DXCM019-0352)
| Type | Filter + regulator + lubricator (FRL) |
|---|---|
| Port size | 3/8" NPT |
| Filtration | 5 micron |
| Lubricator | Adjustable drip, sight glass |
| Mounting | Bracket included |
The three-in-one. The lubricator meters a drop of air-tool oil into the line so your impact wrench and die grinder oil themselves. The catch: anything downstream gets oil, so this is for a dedicated tool drop, not the line that feeds your paint gun or tire chuck. For a garage that is mostly impacts and ratchets, it is the right unit.
- Oils your tools automatically
- 5-micron filter
- Everything in one bracket
- Never run paint or tires through a lubricated line
- Biggest of the group; needs wall space

Husky 1/4" Inline Air Filter (HDA70403AV)
| Type | Filter only |
|---|---|
| Port size | 1/4" NPT |
| Filtration | 5 micron |
| Max inlet | 150 PSI |
| Mounting | Inline, between hose and tool |
No regulator, just a 5-micron filter you screw on at the tool end. It is the cheapest insurance against water in a nailer or a blow gun, and it is what to use on a hose that gets dragged outside. Pair it with the regulator on your compressor and you have a complete setup for under $50.
- $17 and it goes anywhere
- 5 micron
- Small enough to leave on the hose
- Adds a joint and a little pressure drop
- Tiny bowl fills fast in humid weather

Kobalt 1/4" Mini Air Filter
| Type | Filter only |
|---|---|
| Port size | 1/4" NPT |
| Filtration | Water and particulate |
| Max inlet | 150 PSI |
| Mounting | Inline |
Same job as the Husky from the other store. Buy whichever one is closer; they are near-identical in use. Lowe's runs these on sale often, so the live price may be under the Husky.
- Lowe's equivalent of the Husky
- Same 1/4" inline format
- Often on sale
- Same tiny bowl
- Not a regulator

Campbell Hausfeld Air Cleaner and Dryer
| Type | Desiccant dryer + filter |
|---|---|
| Port size | 3/8" NPT |
| Removes | Water vapor, not just droplets |
| Media | Replaceable desiccant beads |
| Mounting | Bracket included |
Filters catch water droplets. Only a dryer catches water vapor, and vapor is what blushes clear coat and fish-eyes a paint job. If you spray anything that matters, this goes between the filter-regulator and the gun. The beads change color when they are saturated and cost a few dollars to replace.
- The only unit here that removes vapor
- Color-change desiccant tells you when to refill
- Needed for HVLP and powder
- Overkill for nailers and impacts
- Beads need replacing in humid shops
Three things that make it work
- Mount it with the bowl down and a foot of hose before it. Air cools in the first stretch of line and drops its water there; the filter catches more if it is not bolted to a hot tank outlet.
- Match the port to your hose. A 1/4" filter on a 3/8" line is a choke point. The Thread ID Guide sorts out which fitting you need.
- Drain the compressor tank too. The filter handles what gets past the tank; it will fill every day if the tank is never drained.
Primefit at the compressor and a Husky or Kobalt inline at the tool is a complete setup for under $50. Step up to the Campbell Hausfeld 5-micron if you run air tools weekly, the DeWalt FRL if those tools are mostly impacts, and add the dryer only when you start spraying.
