A working garage air system is five purchases in the right order. Here is the order, what each one needs to match, and where we would buy each piece.
Five steps, no backtracking
Pick the compressor for your biggest tool, not your tank
Decide by CFM at 90 PSI. Nailers and tires: any 6-gallon pancake. Impact wrench, ratchet, cutoff tool: a 20-to-26-gallon unit with 4 CFM or more. The compressor guide has the six we would buy; the two pancakes below cover most garages.
Standardize on one coupler interchange
Everything snaps together only if every plug and coupler shares a profile. Pick Industrial (I/M) unless you already own a drawer of something else. Coupler on the compressor and on every hose end, plug on every tool. Not sure what you have? Run the interchange finder.
Buy 3/8" hose, not 1/4"
Fifty feet of 1/4" hose can drop 90 PSI to the low 70s at an impact wrench; 3/8" loses a few PSI. Hybrid stays soft in a cold garage. If the stock 25 or 50 ft does not fit your bay, we cut it to length with the ends already on. Check your run in the calculator.
Put the hose on a reel
A hose on the floor gets stepped on and kinked. Mount a retractable reel near the compressor, lag bolts into framing, and put a coupler on the lead-in so you can disconnect it without draining the tank.
Seal every thread once, correctly
Two to three wraps of PTFE tape on every male NPT thread, clockwise as you look at the end of the fitting, first thread left bare. Snug plus a quarter turn. That is the whole secret to a system that does not hiss.
Pancake compressor, Industrial couplers, 3/8" hybrid hose, a reel and a roll of tape: about $300 at the hardware store, or about $650 with the Kobalt 26-gallon if you run air tools. Buy in this order and nothing gets returned.
