The most common return reason is the same every time: the right clamp on the wrong hose. Worm-gear clamps cut silicone. T-bolts crush thin rubber. Spring clamps hold where worm gears loosen. Here is how to match the clamp to the hose, and three we would buy.

Quick answer

Our picks at a glance

Start here

Worm-gear vs T-bolt vs constant-tension

Type How it works Use it on Avoid on
Worm gear (unlined) Slotted band, screw drives the band tighter Rubber hose, PVC, ducting, dryer vent, general shop Silicone and soft hose (the slots cut it)
Worm gear (lined) Same drive, smooth liner under the slots Silicone heater and coolant hose, EPDM, anything soft Nothing; it is the all-rounder
T-bolt Solid rolled band, bolt and nut pull it closed Turbo and CAC hose, 1-3/4" and up, boosted systems Thin-wall hose it can crush; small diameters
Constant tension (spring) Spring keeps clamp force as hose expands and shrinks OEM coolant hose, heat-cycling connections Oversize or odd-size hose; one size only
Spring (wire) Pinch-to-open wire ring Vacuum line, small fuel line, washer hose Anything under real pressure

Two rules that cover most of it. Silicone gets a lined clamp or a T-bolt, never a slotted band. And pick by hose OD, not ID: a 3/4" ID silicone hose is close to 1-1/8" OD, so it takes a SAE 12 clamp, not a SAE 8. Measure the outside with the hose on the fitting.

The picks

What we'd buy, and why

Ideal Tridon 65E Lined Worm-Gear, Stainless
Recommended

Ideal Tridon 65E Lined Worm-Gear, Stainless

What we use on silicone hose · Industrial Supply World
Type Worm gear, lined band
Material All 300-series stainless
Sizes SAE 6 through 20 (1/2" to 1-3/4")
Band 1/2" wide with smooth liner
Torque Up to 55 in-lb

The liner is the whole point. A standard worm-gear clamp has slots punched through the band, and under torque those slots bite into silicone and soft rubber and cut it. The 65E puts a smooth stainless liner under the slots, so it clamps like a worm gear and seals like a band. This is the clamp we ship on every silicone heater-hose job and the only worm-gear we would put on a $40 silicone elbow. The button below goes to the SAE 16 10-pack (fits 1" to 1-1/2" OD); every size from SAE 6 to 20 is in our hose clamp collection.

Good
  • Will not cut silicone or EPDM
  • All stainless, including the screw
  • Same 5/16" hex drive as any worm clamp
Watch out
  • Costs more than an unlined clamp
  • Sizes stop at 1-3/4" OD; bigger hose wants a T-bolt

Ideal-Tridon Stainless Worm-Gear (unlined)
Lowest price

Ideal-Tridon Stainless Worm-Gear (unlined)

Lowe's
Type Worm gear, standard slotted band
Material Stainless band and housing
Sizes 7/16" to 5" OD, sold by size
Band 1/2" wide
Best on Rubber hose, PVC, dryer vent, ducting

The clamp you grew up with, made by the same company as the 65E. For rubber heater hose, radiator hose, PVC and anything that is not silicone, it is the right answer and it costs two dollars. Buy it by the exact size; the range printed on the card is real.

Good
  • $2 to $4 at any Lowe's
  • Every size in stock
  • Stainless, not plated steel
Watch out
  • Slotted band cuts silicone over time
  • Screw can round off if you crank it with an impact

Everbilt 5/16
Small-hose bulk

Everbilt 5/16" to 5/8" Stainless Hose Clamp, 10-Pack

Home Depot
Type Worm gear, mini
Material Stainless
Range 5/16" to 5/8" OD
Band 5/16" narrow
Best on Fuel line, vacuum line, washer hose, PEX

Small-diameter hose wants a narrow-band clamp; a 1/2" band on a 3/8" fuel line just folds over. Everbilt's 10-pack covers the small stuff on a mower, a boat or under a sink for about a dollar a clamp. Keep a box in the drawer.

Good
  • Ten for $12
  • Narrow band fits small hose properly
  • Stainless
Watch out
  • Only this one size range
  • Not for anything over 5/8"

What about T-bolts?

For boosted and large hose: T-bolts

T-bolt clamps are the right clamp for 2" and larger silicone hose and anything under boost. The band is solid, with no slots to cut the hose, and the bolt pulls it closed evenly all the way around. We carry the Flexfab 2583 series T-bolt clamps at hpcouplers, our sister store: 300-series stainless, sold 10 per box in a range of sizes. Size them by the hose OD on the fitting, the same as any clamp.

Installation

Three things that make a clamp hold

  • Put the clamp over the fitting barb, not past it. Center the band over the raised bead or barb; a clamp hanging off the end of the fitting seals nothing.
  • Torque, do not crank. 35 to 55 in-lb on a worm gear. Past that you strip the band or cut the hose; the clamp is not the seal, the hose on the fitting is.
  • Re-snug after the first heat cycle. Silicone and rubber relax once they get hot. Run it, let it cool, give the screw a quarter turn.
The verdict

Silicone hose: the Ideal 65E lined clamp, no exceptions. Everything else under 1-3/4": a $2 Ideal-Tridon stainless worm gear from Lowe's. Small lines: the Everbilt 10-pack. Boosted 2"+ hose: a Flexfab T-bolt.
